Augmenting Scholarly Publishing: Intelligent Emerging Tools & Trends
Issue # 3: Ethics of AI in Scholarly Publishing - Fireworks or Powderkeg?
Welcome, ScholCom/MedCom peers,
As we prepare for πͺ Diwali πͺ in both our households, we are compelled to deliberate on the π responsible & ethical use of AI in scholarly publishing & beyond. π‘ The light of responsible AI can transform our world for better and even the smallest πspark of malicious AI can disrupt our whole being.
πͺ Diwali πͺ is the Indian festival of lights π―οΈ, the joyous celebration of the victory of good πover evil π, & π knowledge over ignorance.
β° Though it took a while (or forever in the context of the pace of current innovation π), The White House has finally issued an executive order on the responsible use of AI to βοΈlevel the playing field for individuals & entities. In contrast, leveraging yet another not-so-transparent AI tool β¬, Google is creating fresh challenges for the publishers to search π§, summarize π€, & monetize π€ their contentβ The concern about the use of black box AI tools by scientists and researchers, which may reduce the validity of scientific knowledge is growing nowβ Two brand new journals π, Critical AI and NEJM AI, have committed to shine light β¨ on AI-related interdisciplinary scholarly contributions π«±π½βπ«² and π©βπ¬ clinical research π¨βπ¬ However, a strained peer review system π΅π½ββοΈ may impact the timely dissemination of research findings, but we have yet to count on AI as either an enemy ππ½or an ally π€π½.
So from your vantage point:
Quick Summaries:
The White House issued an Executive Order (EO) on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence: Recognizing both the promise and the perils that AI holds, the POTUS (President of the United States of America) issued a groundbreaking EO last week, which seemingly could upend the AI industry in ways yet to be explored. The AI EO may help enable an equitable playing field for all individuals & entities.
As Google pushes deeper into AI, publishers see fresh challenges: A new blackbox Google AI tool, Search Generative Experience (SGE), synthesizes summaries to search queries. If the publishers choose not to share their proprietary content to train the tool, their links may not appear in the Google search results. Go figure!
Living guidelines for generative AI β why scientists must oversee its use: This Nature article proposes establishment of an independent scientific body to vet AI-generated content to maintain scientific rigor and trust.Β
Critical AI: Duke University Press has launched a new interdisciplinary research Journal affiliated with the Rutgers Center for Cognitive Science for furthering the goals of accountable technology in public interest.
NEJM AI: New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Group has launched NEJM AI, which is currently soliciting various types of manuscripts highlighting the applications of AI to clinical medicine. This interdisciplinary journal with various stakeholders in mind promises to improve discussion amongst professionals leveraging AI to transform the discipline of medicine.Β Β
AI and Peer Review: Enemies or Allies?: Two camps advocate for either no usage of AI or a transparent use of AI to alleviate the pain points in the currently over-burdened peer review system.Β
Aviβs AI Tool Spotlight:Β
Researchers are increasingly asked to share the datasets that underpin their research. These requests might come from an academic journal, your institution, or β scariest of all β your funding agency.Β
Deciding which datasets you're expected to share and which repositories are most suitable is a challenging task. DataSeer uses Natural Language Processing to help researchers navigate data sharing mandates: it identifies the datasets associated with a manuscript, and gives guidance on where and how that data should be shared.
